To follow Jesus' words and take up our cross, and denying ourselves, is to put aside all that which keeps us from God: the sinful habits, the obsessions, the idols, the selfishness — things that keep us focused on our own lives, our own wants, our own desires, rather than seeking the Kingdom of God.
